Built for the gap remove.bg left behind

remove.bg closes on 1 December 2026. Its replacement on Canva is a limited free trial behind a paid plan. CutForge is the free alternative that stays free, because the work happens on your device instead of on a server that has to be paid for.

  • Free, with no account and no download limits
  • Full resolution — no 9 MB cap, no 10 MP downscale
  • Private by design — nothing is uploaded, ever
  • Batch processing — drop in a whole folder of photos
  • Erase and Restore brushes for tricky edges
  • Works offline after the first load

How it works

Three steps, no learning curve.

1

Drop in a photo

Upload, drag and drop, or paste an image. JPG, PNG or WebP.

2

The background disappears

The AI finds the subject and cuts the background out in a few seconds, right in your browser.

3

Download the cutout

Transparent PNG at full resolution, or add a colour, blur or new image behind it first.

How it compares

The same job, without the paywall.

Questions

Is CutForge really free?

Yes. There is no account, no free trial that runs out, and no paid plan. The background removal runs on your own device, so there is nothing to charge for.

Do my photos get uploaded anywhere?

No. The AI model downloads to your browser once, and every image is processed on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is stored.

What is the maximum image size?

There is no file size limit and no resolution cap on your download. Very large photos (over 4000px on the longest side) are exported at 4000px so the page stays fast.

Can I remove backgrounds from several photos at once?

Yes. Drop in as many images as you like and they are processed one after another. Each one gets its own download button.

How do I get a transparent background?

Pick the Transparent option and download as PNG. PNG keeps the transparency. If you download as JPG, pick a colour or blur background first, because JPG has no transparency.

The edges look rough on hair. Can I fix that?

Yes. Use the edge softness slider to smooth the outline, or the Erase and Restore brushes to paint the mask by hand. Brushes work right on the preview.

What file formats can I upload?

JPG, PNG and WebP. The download is a PNG (transparent or with your chosen background) or a JPG.

Why is remove.bg closing, and is this the same thing?

remove.bg announced its standalone website closes on 1 December 2026 and moves to Canva, where background removal is a limited free trial behind a paid plan. CutForge does the same job with a different approach: the AI runs in your browser, so it stays free and private.
